Hot Battle Prior to XXIX Olympiad Features Predictive Weather System
Melbourne, January 23, 2008 – The Danish Sailing Association, competing fiercely for the 470 World Championships this week in Australia, is using ClearPoint High Definition Weather™, the world’s most comprehensive and easy-to-use high resolution weather service.
The 470 World Championship class represents the “two person dinghy” races for both men and women at the Olympic Sailing Regatta. ClearPoint Weather is being used as a core element of the Danish team’s tactical planning for a series of sailing races that are taking place from January 21-30 on Port Phillip Bay near Melbourne in Australia.
“ClearPoint is proving to be a very reliable service for us during training and during the 470 World Championship competition as we try to create a clearer picture of what the weather conditions are likely to bring over the next week of competition in this challenging sailing weather environment,” said Michael Staal, General Manager of the Danish Sailing Association. ”We use a broad variety of meteorological sources each day to improve the precision of our forecasting relating to shifting winds and sea conditions, and we have found ClearPoint’s high resolution model -- especially its 1 nautical mile resolution product -- highly accurate compared to other services.”
The 470 World Championships feature 153 entries from a total number of 38 representing nations. In addition to the challenge for the Worlds title, the World Championships will decide on the remaining 25 percent of country qualifications for the Olympic Sailing Regatta. A total of 50 nations are competing for participation at the Olympic Sailing Regatta in the summer of 2008, where only 29 starting places are available in the 470 men and 19 starting places in the 470 women.
The Danish team will also be using ClearPoint at the upcoming Olympic class races at the World Championships for Tornado and Laser Radials being held at Takapuna Beach, New Zealand in February.
“We are delighted to be providing our high resolution service to the Danish Sailing team and wish them the best of luck in this week’s races,” said Stuart Johnstone, Chief Operating Officer, ClearPoint. “We are seeing increasing interest among Olympic teams such as the Danish Sailing Association and other world-class sailing competitors, and we believe ClearPoint will prove the perfect tool for analyzing and forecasting weather conditions with precise data on winds, fronts and currents in the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Regatta zone this summer,” said Johnstone.
ClearPoint currently provides high resolution weather services covering the Qingdao area in China, home of this year’s Olympic sailing races, as one of its 1, 5 and 15 nautical mile “Sailing Hotspots.” Sailors can access ClearPoint’s weather services anywhere around the globe and receive the same high quality weather information for key global sailing ‘hotspots’ at any time, using any PC-based display with Internet access. ClearPoint’s ultra-high resolution weather service provides over 20 core applications and in-depth weather data for forecasts up to five days ahead.
