Mike Perham - Where he is and what the weather is like today on his ClearPoint Weather display:
From his Blog:
Well I've left Auckland now and am currently sailing past Great Barrier Island and out into the Pacific. I've been looking forward to this part of the trip as it should be getting a little bit warmer (for now) and also a bit easier on Totallymoney.com as the swells tend to be much longer out here than in the Indian Ocean.
The bearing finally arrived on Monday afternoon and despite the very short notice, the guys at the Pier 21 crane managed to fit us in that very evening so we could fit the rudders and bearings right away. Thanks for that!
....
Back at the dock, it took us a good ninety minutes to get everything spick and span with the rudder bearings and also the steering rods. Afterwards, Alan and Tim left to head off home, but I stayed on a bit later to do a bit more tidying up on board – the kind that only I could do.
I had arranged with a local group of Sea Scouts that they could come and look at Totallymoney.com in the evening and when they arrived they were all pretty awed by her impressive design.
...
Today - Wednesday, we all met up on the dock at around 9.30am and I got away an hour later. A rib escorted us, along with customs and with my clearance papers in hand I sailed off and out past Rangitoto Island, putting in a few gybes as I went.
The wind dropped right off and my progress wasn't great at first with a boat speed of only 3.5knots, luckily the tide was with me though so the speed over ground was up to a fraction over 4knots. I was going slowly fast!
The wind eventually filled in a bit more and currently as I write this we've got around 11knots of it. There should be some more right offshore, though. I'm now north of Great Barrier Island and am heading up North East to my current waypoint.
I'm having to sail up here to escape most of the nasty stuff from a rather large low pressure system that is coming up here later this weekend to knock on our door. After letting the system pass by we'll drop back down into the low 30's and skirt along heading pretty much due east.
It's good to be back out here and so, bring on the Pacific!
